Knee Replacement Surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee to help ease the pain and disability caused by to severe osteoarthritis. Apart from treating osteoarthritis, the doctor may also suggest knee replacement surgery for treating:

  • Rheumatoid Arthtitis, a condition in which the immune system of the body attacks to destroys the knee lining.
  • Deformities like bowed legs
  • Knee Injury that has caused a broken bone or torn ligament around the knee.
  • Osteonecrosis or Avascular Necrosis, a condition in which the blood flow to the bones stops.

Types of Knee Replacement Surgery

Total Knee Replacement Surgery: In which the surface of the thighbone and shinbone that connect to the knee are replaced.

Partial knee replacement: In which only one side of the knee is replaced. This is only possible if arthritis partially affects the knee. The surgeon only suggests this if the patient has strong knee ligaments.

Kneecap replacement: In which only the under-surface of the kneecap is replaced. Many surgeons, however, do not recommend this, as it has low rate of success when compared to total knee replacement surgery.

Complex knee replacement: This is recommended in case a patient has had 2-3 knee replacement surgeries in the past or has severe arthritis.

The Procedure of Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery can take up to 1-2 hours. During the surgery, the orthopedic surgeon replaces the diseased or damaged part of the knee joint with a metal or plastic component that’s allows to mimic the functionality and movement of the original knee.

Recovery after Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery involves extensive postoperative pain. It is highly recommended to get vigorous physical therapy post operation. It may take up to 6 weeks or more to recover. Meanwhile, use of mobility aids like canes, crutches or walking frame may be required.
